Porcelain is the ultimate of all clays due to its very fine particle size and the only one that can show translucency. It is these properties that draw me to work only in porcelain.

All my work is produced with a commercially made translucent porcelain. This type of clay allows me to show off the beautiful fineness of that particular clay body.

Most of my work is wheel thrown but I do enjoy handbuilding and assembling thrown parts to produce interesting forms. I am now experimenting with unfired ceramic substrate, KERAFLEX, which I apply to my unfired porcelain to give it a relief affect.

I love the delicacy of porcelain and try to take it as far as I can with my pierced pieces. I enjoy making these forms as they challenge me to see just how fine I can work with porcelain.

Many of my glazes are micro crystalline which you can see in the Crystal Pink Pierced Series, Blue Series and Brown Kamloops Series. I have always loved Oriental glazes - the celadons, copper reds and temmokus.

The Kamloops Series is developed from a base of earthenware clay found in the Kamloops region of BC. Alone it is a lovely rich brown. I darken it with metallic oxides to produce two black glazes. Some of the pieces are textured to bring out the look of beaten metal. The inspiration for this glaze comes from seeing old iron work in Japan.

I don't paint on the surface of my pieces, rather I develop glazes that will enhance their form.
